 &lt;h1&gt;Increase your Google clickthrough rates.&lt;/h1&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Lately many site owners have been asking me what clickthrough rate they should be getting from listings in various page positions on Google. This is because they have not been getting the amount of clicks they would have expected.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;A study by AOL in 2006 showed that on average each listing should get a predictable clickthrough rate. That makes the fourth natural search listing the 10&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; actual listing on the page. Google news, shopping, paid search, you tube results etc also force down the natural search listings making them near obsolete.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;As if this weren&amp;rsquo;t bad enough the natural listings are also becoming far less interesting than the other types of listings. So potential shoppers may see a natural search listing in position one but would rather click on the Google shopping result or one of the more exciting listings surrounding it.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The end result is that &amp;lsquo;simple&amp;rsquo; natural listings are receiving far fewer clicks than they should for keywords that trigger universal search.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;So what should you do? Well as the old saying goes if you can&amp;rsquo;t beat them, join them!! This is a new social media platform where millions of people are sharing similarly personal information. That we are used to, but what makes G+ different? These are not very useful from an SEO perspective and generally serve to provide users with additional resources or information from other sources.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Inbound links (also known as backlinks) are links from an external website back to your site. The quality and quantity of these links is calculated by the search engines and this date reflects the relevance of your site. Quality inbound links are typically from sites that are relevant to yours, whereas ppor or bad inbound links come from less than ideal sources such as link farms - so in essence not all links are good links!!&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;ul&gt;  &lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hyperlinks and anchor text&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/li&gt;  &lt;/ul&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Anchor text consists of the words that form the hyperlink itself and plays a vital part in how effective your link is from an SEO point of view. While the source of the link is important, the actual text used in the hyp[erlink is pivotal. Yours might be one of them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dan Tynan&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Want to hear some good news? We now know exactly how much your Facebook profile is worth on the open market: Between 25 and 45 cents, depending on whether you have more than 10 friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bad news? How we found out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Verisign's iDefense, a Russian hacker known as Kirllos is selling 1000 Facebook IDs at a pop for $25 (if you have 10 friends or less) or $45 (if you're in the 11+ friends crowd). Thus explaining that rash of bogus Facebook password reset spam I got last month. He's apparently successfully phished log ons for some 1.5 million Facebookers, which he's now hawking on the antichat.ru forums.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is your account one of them? There's really no way to know for sure, unless you're seeing stuff posted under your name you didn't put there. But if you've recently responded to an email purporting to be from Facebook asking you to log into your account, there's a very strong chance the answer is yes. (I'd recommend logging in and changing your password to something tricky. Do it right now. Go on, I'll wait.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What can some miscreant do with your Facebook identity?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* He can use it to infect other Facebook users by posting links on your friends' walls to Web sites containing malware, a la the Koobface worm, which has been tormenting users of Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter for two+ years. Koobface can suck your PC into a botnet, at which point it doesn't really belong to you any more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* He can use it to run big-money con games on your friends, a la the infamous "London Scam" in which a cybercrook pretends to be an old friend of yours who's stranded overseas and needs you to wire him cash -- fast. The London Scam took at least one U.S. victim for $4,000. Unlike Nigerian 414 scams, which requires mind-numbing stupidity on the part of its victims, the London Scam directly attacks affluent, college-educated, computer literate people. (I had a friend who got approached by the same scammer, who was seriously considering wiring the money until I explained what was going on.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;* He can use it to embarrass, harass, or blackmail you. Want to ruin someone's reputation in a hurry? Log on as them and post humiliating or hateful content on their page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But here's the bigger threat. Facebook really wants to be the single sign-on engine for the Web (see "What's to like about Facebook's 'Like' button?"). So a Facebook log on isn't just a Facebook log on anymore; it's also a log on to sites like Unvarnished, the Huffington Post, and any others that use Facebook Connect. If that's not an argument against using Facebook for single sign on, I don't know what is. Even if you don't use FB Connect, most people tend to use the same log ons for multiple sites; once a crook has your email address and favorite password, he can go to town on you. Nervous yet?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bottom line: Your Facebook credentials are important, and only getting more so. If you want to protect yourself online, you'll need to protect them as well. Start by mixing up your passwords for your favorite sites, changing them semi regularly, and not getting duped by every stupid email marked "urgent."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also: I gotta say I find this whole thing kind of insulting. (Are you smelling the coffee…..)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So today, Facebook announce, with the addition of a single line of code, you can “like” a news story, a movie on imdb, a music track on pandora…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;IN AN ACT OF SHEER PSYCHOLOGICAL BRILLIANCE – the little line of code puts up a little picture of YOUR friends who’ve also “liked” that thing on the web. Robert Cialdini (author of Influence, the definitive guide to decision making triggers) must have weeped with joy at the social engineering (Note – I love this, I’m not sure others will…)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Facebook point out – liking something up untill today or tweeting or foursquaring was a temporary blip, if your friends happened to log in the last three hours they MIGHT have seen it. Let’s face it, if you tweeted it’s a crapshoot on a numbers basis if your friends actually see anything.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So when you click the new “Like” Facebook button, being very helpful and all, Facebook will update your permanent profile with your new like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;THEY UPDATE YOUR PROFILE (your news feed to – but forget that -as of today it’s irrelevant) – the PROFILE of your LIKES!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To Quote myself…&lt;br /&gt;“You know – the data you’ve not updated SINCE YOU JOINED!!!!!!”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same data facebook and people like me use to TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC PAY PER CLICK ADVERTISING ON FACEBOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!&lt;br /&gt;FRESH UP-TO-DATE DATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a smart marketers wet dream. Seriously it’s the marketing equivalent of Hedi Klum walking into my study right now and saying (In that awesome German tingend English) “you know vhat tubby balding short guys are… now…in – let’s get bos….”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If Facebook implement as described, marketers will have completely up-to-date data to craft their advertisements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’m a marketer and proud of it. This is brilliant, I want to give you a directly targeted marketing experience. With fresh demographic data based on likes -I can do that. SWEEEET.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(SIDE NOTE – This also drops Facebook in the middle of the local advertising game – you YELP, you update your facebook PROFILE automatically, I can then create an Ad based on the fact that you “liked” KFC -someone pinch me, I’m still in the dream with Hedi)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People are going to freak out about this and it’s a shame – Facebook does not expose YOUR data specifically – only people who you’ve given permission to as a friend will actually see your profile and I can see this being fantastic way of really keeping in touch – how many of my friends liked “Hurt Locker” for example – that’s the next step of Facebooks evolution, it makes sense. The lads at Facebook GET this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BUT if “likes” gets significant take up – they may just rival google and perhaps be even more influential. But many people only focus on the hard work of over delivering, when it can be easier, and frankly more effective, to get better at under promising. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s assume, though, that you’re good at what you do and always improving, and that your best competitors are, too. In this environment, everyone is striving for high quality at a reasonable price, making it hard to consistently deliver a significantly better product or service. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That’s where under promising can work wonders. Here are two lazy ways to exceed expectations: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Deliver ahead of time not just on time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No, I’m not suggesting you bust your gut to work any faster. You can deliver ahead of schedule simply by tweaking your promises. For example before you send an email or talk to a customer: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change “I’ll get that to you this morning”, to “I’ll get that to you this afternoon.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change “By the end of this week,” to “early next week.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change “Close of close of business Wednesday,” to “Thursday morning.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You get the idea. Obviously while those are the expectations you set with the client, internally you carry on as normal to meet your original estimates on timing. People are so used to lateness and chasing tardy suppliers, delivering ahead of time makes a big impact. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Deliver under budget not just on budget. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems to be standard practice that quotes are a minimum price. Most jobs end up with what was on the quote, plus a few extra charges on top by the end of the project – never to the joy of the customer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But what if you delivered under budget? Imagine if your house painter said this: “Look, I know I quoted €3,600, but there was less preparation than I’d estimated so the bill’s only €3,250!” I reckon you’d fall off your chair, and the referrals and trust levels would rise. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It may not always be possible, but where you can, try and quote with a little breathing room in the budget. That way if the project expands a little you can absorb some extra costs without having to sting the client for more, while if things go well you can invoice for a little less. It may appear that you lose money that you could have easily collected, but you will gain client loyalty and respect. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You’ll notice that neither of these scenarios requires any more work at all.
